FULL-TIME: ASTON VILLA 1 (Benteke '27) - NORWICH 1 (Turner '79)
14.50 That's all we've got time for with this blog. But please go and
join my colleague Rod Gilmour who is keeping an eye on
14.46 Some bullish post-match chat from goalscorer Michael Turner:
After Villa's goal I think we dominated the whole game and we're disappointed not to pick up all three points.
14.40 Here's a quick snapshot from John Percy who had the misfortune of sitting in the cold and watching that match:
Paul Lambert has made the worst start in 43 years at Aston Villa after Michael Turner's equaliser enabled his former club to claim a deserved point. Turner levelled 11 minutes from time to sentence Lambert to an unenviable record and increase growing fears that Villa are heading for another excruciating season.
Christian Benteke had raised hopes of only a second Premier League win for Lambert with a 27th minute opener but the dismissal of Joe Bennett set the tone for a difficult second half, with Turner's header a reward for a steady period of Norwich pressure.
This was supposed to be an stormy reunion for Lambert after his bitter departure in June - but was about as hostile as a infant's birthday party. His exit is still yet to be resolved, with both parties suing each other, but there was no bile or 'Judas' chants from the visiting supporters.
14.39 This is what the table looks like for now:
90+5 min A quite terrible match has come to an end. It's full-time and the whistle is met by some quite understandable boos. Dreadful entertainment. You don't hear about these kind of matches when people laud the Premier League. And you won't hear about this match ever again.
90+4 min Snodgrass latches onto a knockdown but he can only hoist the ball over the bar. And that must be that.
90+3 min A clash of heads involving Bent leads to a prolonged stoppage which means this misery may continue for an extra minute.
90+2 min Norwich launch a final attack. It starts with real promise but it ends with Ryan Bennett blazing over the bar. What a waste.
90 min Fans heading for the exit with no sign of a dramatic finish. But what's that? Four minutes of stoppage time. You might beat the traffic but you could miss a goal. Think hard, fans.
88 min Norwich have a decent free-kick position which Sniodgrass wastes by putting too much on his delivery. Out for a goal-kick.
87 min Decent counter attack from Villa is foiled by the Norwich defence and they go upfield to win another corner.
86 min Corner to Norwich - their seventh. It's looking bleak for Villa. Can they hold out?
84 min Holt looking very dangerous now as the noise levels return to those heard at Richardson Evans playing fields in Roehampton on a Sunday morning.
82 min A stat that will enrich your life:
81 min Norwich are going for the winner! The cheeky blighters!
79 min GOAL! ASTON VILLA 1 - NORWICH 1 (Turner) Short corner from Norwich. Hoolahan whips the ball in and Turner is there to flick a header against Guzan's right hand post and in the back of the net. It was coming........
78 min Norwich throwing the kitchen sink at Villa but the hosts are just about coping. Corner to Norwich after Snodgrass's shot is aved.
77 min Huge chance for Norwich! Holt is put through on goal and has a one-on-one with Guzan but the Villa 'keeper denies Norwich again. It wasn't the greatest finish I've seen from Holt but a top save nonetheless.
76 min Substitution for Villa. Andreas Weimann is on for Brett Holman
75 min Nothing to report.
73 min Norwich have, it is fair to say, bossed this second half since the red card but their attacking play is just blunt. Your defence only needs to be half-decent to keep them at bay, which explains why Arsenal lost last week.
72 min ANOTHER corner to Norwich. This is getting ridiculous now. Punched away by Guzan but only as far as Snodgrass.
71 min Norwich have the throw. Can they magic up a decent shooting chance though. No. But they've got a corner.
69 min Holt gets above Vlaar but his header is off target. Meanwhile Aston Villa make a sub. And it's a biggie - Darren Bent on for Benteke.
68 min Norwich heaping the pressure on but no shot on goal materialises from the head tennis match in the box.
67 min I think the exciting period of this match has come to an end. Will report back on any sightings of a decent football match, should one return.
65 min Norwich bossing possession with the extra man advantage. 61 per cent to the away side.
64 min Chance for Norwich! Hoolahan conjures up a shooting chance and he blasts towards goal but Guzan is up to the task and diverts it out for a corner.
63 min Albrighton released in the penalty area but his touch is far too heavy. He reaches the ball before it goes out but it's on the line and his cutback is limp. Herd booked for a foul.
61 min Pen? Elliott Bennett receives a shove in the back from Lichaj in the box. A little bit of a shove but probably not enough for a spot kick. Ref Dowd agrees.
59 min Throw to Villa in the 'red zone'. They might be down to 10 but they still fancy a goal. It's cleared by Norwich though so they'll have to wait a bit longer.
58 min Darren Bent was warming up but now he's sat down again. Did he just have a numb bottom?
57 min Villa fans who came out after the break full of song and optimism have gone all quiet again. You can't chant if you're biting your nails.
56 min Vital intervention from Turner who just gets a boot to the ball with Benteke bearing down on goal. This game is, er, exciting. Did not think I'd say that. Meanwhile Darren Bent is warming up.
55 min Change for Villa after that red card. Eric Lichaj on for Agbonlahor. The sub will go to fullback to leave Benteke up front alone.
54 min Elliott Bennett puts a deep ball into the Villa box that has Ruddy backpeddling and flicking a palm to it. This game has roared into second gear now.
52 min RED CARD! Villa's Joe Bennett sent off for a second bookable offence after he fouled his namesake Elliott. Innocuous challenge but them's the rules. Two strikes and your out.
51 min Delph with the ball at his feet about 10 yards outside the box. "SHOOOOOT," demand the Villa fans. Come on chaps, that's just not realistic.
49 min Free-kick to Norwich is cleared by Villa, who look so much more comfortable since taking the lead in this match.
48 min Ruddy claims the corner and immediately launches a counter attack.
47 min Villa camped in Norwich territory, winning successive throws in the left-hand corner. Bennett swings in a cross that Bassong does well to head out for a corner.
46 min Second half kicks off with a Norwich change. Ryan Bennett on for Russell Martin. Villa start well with that man Benteke winning yet another header. He's at full stretch for this one though and can't quite the power behind it to beat Ruddy at his near post.
13.46 Players making their way on to the pitch for the second half. Come on, boys. Give us a show.
13.41 Not much to report on the tweeting or other digital opinion front. Sometimes the standard of a match is so poor that people aren't even compelled to make a negative remark.
13.34 A mail from Paul to ponder while you wait for the kettle to boil:
Really like Bent and think he is a terrific old-fashioned poacher but he winds his managers up. He should be first choice at Villa but Benteke is looking good today. Bent needs better advice on how to behave off the field otherwise he will be forever on the bench.
45+1 min Phil Dowd blows for half-time. "Not a classic," says the Sky commentator. Understatement of the day.
45 min We're into the red numbers with just a minute of stoppage time to be played.
44 min Villa making use of these final minutes of the half by launching an attack but it's not particularly well constructed and the poor passing that has been a hallmark of this match condemns the attack.
42 min The noise levels are now lower than most Sunday league games. Come on fans - it's the ruddy Premier League!
40 min Ominous for Norwich?
38 min Benteke really earning his stripes, here. He traps a long ball really well before curling a shot on goal that is diverted out for a corner. Norwich struggling to cope with him at the moment.
37 min Long free-kick towards Benteke, who wins the aerial challenge yet again, but there's no-one on hand to capitalise on his flick on.
35 min Good knockdown from Benteke but the ball runs away from Agbonlahor before the striker can get a shot away.
33 min Now then! Norwich with an unbroken spell of about 12 passes but the last one, the one that mattered, goes to no-one and Villa hoof it clear.
32 min Albrighton wins a throw for Villa deep in Norwich territory as the hosts go in search of goal No 2.
31 min It's another weak free-kick and the ball bounces harmlessly out for a goal-kick.
30 min Set-piece is straight at Guzan, who punches the ball away. Norwich gather the ball and the ref whistles for a foul to hand the Canaries a second chance.
29 min First booking of the game as Joe Bennett fouls his Norwich namesake, who had cruised past him on the right. Decent free-kick for Norwich.
27 min GOAL! ASTON VILLA 1- NORWICH 0 (Benteke) Oh that's a great finish but woeful marking from Norwich. Benteke is picked out in the box and, all on his own, is given the time and space to get the ball out of his feet and and stroke it beyond Ruddy for his second league goal of the season.
26 min Ball comes to El Ahmadi and Villa have a rare shooting chance. But misses the target by miles. Waste. Then Norwich sweep forward and Holt does superbly to peel away from his marker and nod the ball across goal. Top work from Holt but he didn't have a colleague in the box and Guzan collected.
25 min Martin makes a good run to show up on the overlap on the right but his cross is rank and goes out for a goal-kick.
24 min Great spell for Norwich, this. Crisp attacking play but when they look for the final flourish, the requisite class is absent. This is why goals may be hard to come by this afternoon.
23 min Norwich keep the pressure on and the ball makes its way to Bassong in a good position. An offside position, though.
22 min Best chance of the match! Lovely little dink through from Holt to Hoolahan, who should score! His finish lacks conviction though and Guzan diverts the ball out for a corner.
19 min Free-kick comes to nothing but Villa sweep forward again and win a throw in right-hand corner. Ball is whipped in from the right but it's out for a goal-kick. Then we are treated to something quite wonderful. As the 19th minute comes up on the clock, the Villa and Norwich fans come to their feet to applaud Stiliyan Petrov, who is fighting leukaemia. 19th minute for his squad number, 19.
18 min Villa in the Norwich third. Benteke sets off on a mazy run and is brought down by Pilkington for a free-kick. Decent attacking position, this.
16 min I want to tell you about some action and excitement, I really do. But there isn't any. There just isn't. Goal-kick to Norwich.
14 min Mistake from Norwich hands possession to Villa, with Albrighton pouncing on the ball. But he decides to give it away. The stats show that Norwich have had 55 per cent of possession so far. Seems about right.
13 min Starting to wonder why I didn't go with the under 2.5 goals bet. Cheeky fiver on the draw would have been sensible too.
11 min Dodgy challenge from Albrighton and the referee rightly whistles. Ruddy motions his players forward and goes long with the kick. The attack comes to nothing though.
10 min Bassong deals well with Albrighton and forces the Villa winger to concede a goal-kick.
9 min Empty seats and a distinct lack of noise. Villa Park a pretty glum place to be :(
7 min Pilkington gives the ball away in attack and Albrighton storms forward. Holman then takes control, playing a one-two (of sorts) with Benteke before shooting tamely at Ruddy, who promptly saves.
6 min Corner to Villa after some good work from Delph and Agbonlahor. Benteke meets the corner but his header loops well over the bar.
5 min Scrappy start not befitting of the Galacticos on show.
3 min Hoolahan the latest Norwich man given time and space to pick a pass. He finds Bennett on the right but the cross is not a threatening one.
2 min Ball sent long to Pilkington but it's too long and Villa clear the ball. Norwich being allowed plenty of time on the ball to launch attacks.
1 min We're under way. Very scrappy start from the Villa defence. Bennett is allowed to skip down the right and make the byline. His cutback isn't dangerous but Villa still make a hash of getting it cleared.
12.44 Villa form a huddle before kick-off, the players clearly aware of how vital a win is.
12.42 Teams out on the pitch for their handshakes, photos and mascot japes.
12.41 We're all about Villa today across all platforms. In the Daily
Telegraph Henry Winter interviewed Paul Lambert.
Paul Lambert thrives on pressure, which is just as well as he seeks to revive Aston Villa’s fortunes and with a tense game today against Norwich City, his last employers who he is in legal dispute with over the manner of his leaving.
12.35 More on Benty. He did
Of course I wouldn't hand in a transfer request, Villa is a massive club and for me to do that would be silly, especially at this stage of the season when there's still a long way to go. How long am I prepared to wait? As long as it takes. If something happens in January, it won’t be from my doing. I’m not going to go in and say I’m going to leave. If they feel in January it’s time to part ways then that’ll be down to them. From my perspective, I’m more than happy to play my football here.
12.32 I know this fixture screams glamour but it's actually a bottom-half scrap. Look at the table for proof:
12.31 Poor Benty. It's not been his season, has it? This stat says it alll
12.25 TEAM NEWS: Wow. No Darren Bent for the third time in four games. Christian Benteke is preferred up front, with Marc Albrighton and Chris Herd also included in place of Stephen Ireland and Nathan Baker. Chris Hughton has kept faith with the team that beat Arsenal, and why not?
Aston Villa: Guzan, Herd, Vlaar, Lowton, Bennett, Albrighton, El
Ahmadi, Holman, Delph, Agbonlahor, Benteke.
Subs: Given, Ireland, Bent, Westwood, Bannan, Weimann, Lichaj.
Norwich: Ruddy, Russell Martin, Bassong, Turner, Garrido, Elliott
Bennett, Tettey, Johnson, Pilkington, Hoolahan, Holt.
Subs: Rudd, Snodgrass, Howson, Jackson, Morison, Barnett, Ryan Bennett.
Referee: Phil Dowd (Staffordshire)
12.20 Good afternoon and thanks for joining me for live coverage of this spicy little morsel from Villa Park. One expects this fixture has been circled in Paul Lambert's diary for some time now. He was always going to be under pressure from the Norwich fans and owners, still aggrieved that he left them for Villa after two successive promotions. But he probably didn't expect to be under this much pressure in his new job come the end of October. But he is. He is.
Villa have won just once, against Swansea on Sept 15, and lost their last two against Tottenham and Fulham. He better start delivering soon or he'll go from a two-way tussle for his services to sitting on the sofa watching repeats of Two And A Half Men on a Tuesday morning. This match matters so let's get going.
READ A MATCH PREVIEW
Paul Lambert and Chris Hughton have both battled all week to try and downplay the significance of this fixture but are wasting their time.
Lambert's acrimonious exit from Carrow Road, and the subsequent legal feud which will not be settled until next year, guarantees this will be an emotionally charged afternoon.
Despite his sterling achievements, he can expect a hostile reception from the Norwich supporters who once idolised him and needs a win, after Villa's worst start to a season in more than 25 years.
Norwich's triumph over Arsenal last weekend cannot have failed to raise morale and the squad Lambert left behind will be determined to prove a point to their old boss.
Betting: Home 10-11, Away 3-1, Draw 11-5.
Stat of the game: Since Villa beat Norwich 3-2 at Villa Park last November, they have won just two of their last 16 home games.
John Percy’s prediction: Aston Villa 2 Norwich City 1.
