Manchester United make first move for Robin van Persie but Arsenal not interested in bids below £20m

Manchester United have made a first move to sign Robin van Persie from Arsenal, but the two clubs remain a huge distance apart in their respective valuations.

Van Persie is to be omitted from Arsenal's pre-season tour of Asia, which departs tomorrow, with Arsene Wenger expected to cite fitness issues rather than his refusal to sign a new contract for his absence.

Van Persie is also the subject of serious interest from both Juventus and Manchester City, but Manchester United have already been in touch with Arsenal and made an inquiry.

United, though, indicated that they were not even prepared to get near a transfer fee of £15m for last season's leading Premier League goalscorer.

Arsenal will not even listen to offers below £20m and, after getting £24m last summer for Samir Nasri, are holding out for a fee in excess of £25m.

Van Persie is interested in the option of Juventus but the financial firepower of City still make them favourites. City want to find buyers for some of their strikers, including Emmanuel Adebayor and Roque Santa Cruz, before tabling a formal offer for Van Persie.
