Abou Diaby blow for Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger as midfielder is ruled out of France's World Cup qualifier

Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger has been dealt a blow with the announcement that midfielder Abou Diaby has been ruled out of France’s World Cup qualifier against Belarus tonight with a muscle strain.

Diaby’s career has been plagued by injuries. He played only four games for Arsenal last season and missed euro 2012. However, he has been key to Arsenal’s encouraging start to the Premier League season. They are unbeaten after three games with no goals conceded. Diaby scored the goal in France’s 1-0 victory in Finland.

“He took a bad knock and won’t train,” French coach Didier Deschamps said. “He is not free in his movements.”

Wenger received more encouraging news from Deschamps concerning striker Olivier Giroud. The forward missed the Finland game but came through a training session on Sunday. Manchester City defender Gaël Clichy missed the session and is unlikely to be selected.

Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech is suffering from an elbow injury that will require surgery next summer, according to Czech Republic medical staff. Chelsea are hoping to manage Cech through the season and they have asked the Czech Republic to rest him from friendly internationals. Czech coach Michal Bilek has agreed to the request.

“An investigation showed a bit of ossification in his elbow, so Chelsea are planning surgery in England after the season,” a Czech spokesman said. “They have asked us if we could rest him in friendly fixtures. We are going to grant their wish and rest him.

“Petr cannot stretch the arm properly. If he has to stretch the elbow, it hurts him sometimes.”

Cech captained the Czech Republic in Saturday’s World Cup qualifier against Denmark in Copenhagen, which ended in a 0-0 draw, but he will sit out tonight’s friendly against Finland.
