Aston Villa's new manager Paul Lambert vows to throw out the negative tactics used by Alex McLeish

Paul Lambert believes Aston Villa have been on the slide ever since Martin O’Neill’s exit and has pledged to get rid of the negative tactics employed by Alex McLeish and which brought about his exit.

Aston Villa secured three successive top-six finishes under O’Neill, who Lambert still refers to as the “gaffer”, but have been in the doldrums ever since the Ulsterman’s shock departure in August 2010.

Gérard Houllier was unable to repeat O’Neill’s achievements while McLeish was sacked at the end of last season after a 11 months in charge.

Villa’s new manager officially begins his reign against West Ham on Saturday. McLeish’s cautious, safety-first approach was detested by fans while Lambert established a reputation at his former club Norwich City for a more adventurous, attacking style.

Lambert said: “I need to change everything, the whole thing. I certainly think since the gaffer left it’s had a hard time. It’s not been a great two years and I’ve got to try and do it my way.

“We have to lift the feeling of what’s happened here before. We’ll go and try and win every game we can. I’m not going to try and sit back. I’m pretty sure they’re not going to sit there and wait for you to take 40 minutes to get into the game and have your first shot at goal. They won’t accept it so you have to get the crowd going.

“Will I need patience? I hope so, especially if you’re trying to rectify in six weeks something that’s been happening for two years.”

Lambert has recruited Ron Vlaar, Matthew Lowton and Karim El Ahmadi..
