After a tug of war for the services of the 23-year-old, Liverpool revived negotiations when a protracted move to North London hit complications.

In what has become a straight fight for the services of the 23 year-old, Liverpool revived negotiations after a protracted move to north London hit complications.

Brendan Rodgers, the Liverpool manager, had virtually given up on recruiting the Turkey international as Arsenal could offer Champions League football to the player.

But Liverpool’s willingness to agree a straight, one-year loan allowed talks with his representatives to continue at Anfield on Thursday night. Arsenal wanted a permanent transfer.

“Hopefully in the next 24 hours we will get some confirmation. It is quite far down the line,” said Rodgers following his side’s 1-0 win over Hearts in the Europa League play-off.

Sahin wanted to keep his options open in the event of Madrid finding a place for him next season.

Sahin’s representatives had kept the door open for both English clubs throughout the saga, but the Turk will be on Merseyside for a medical before this weekend’s Premier League game with Manchester City.

Rodgers is anxious to add more quality to his squad but he has already used up his summer budget on Fabio Borini and Joe Allen. That has left him scouring the loan market until he can sell-off
