Sergio Aguero targets rapid return for Manchester City as Daniele De Rossi opts to stay with Roma

Sergio Agüero aims to begin rehabilitation on his knee ligament injury at Manchester City on Wednesday with the Argentine forward hoping to return to action within a month.

Although City’s medical staff are to delay a public prognosis of the injury, sustained against Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday, until a second scan has been performed on Agüero’s right knee, sources close to the player have claimed that an initial examination on Sunday evening pointed to a short-term lay-off for the striker.

While Agüero is likely to be sidelined until after next month’s international break, the player tweeted a positive update on his injury on his Twitter page on Tuesday.

Agüero said: “Thank you all for your concern. I’m better but still resting with an ice pack on the swollen area and very eager to start recovery physio tomorrow! I’ll keep you posted. All the best!”

Manchester City, who remain keen to sign Swansea winger Scott Sinclair before the weekend, appear to have missed out on another leading summer target following Daniele De Rossi’s announcement that he is to stay at Roma.

Although City manager Roberto Mancini retains a strong interest in the player, despite De Rossi’s seemingly categorical statement, a new move for the 29 year-old would now require a dramatic about-turn by the Italy midfielder.

De Rossi said: “I’m staying here [Roma], I feel good here, and I never asked anyone to leave. What I promise everyone is the day I want to leave Roma to win the Champions League or make more money, I will say so in public. For me it’s important to say my piece. I am here at Roma, I’m happy and never asked to leave.”
