Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero faces long flights to and from Argentina to prove his injury

Roberto Mancini admits Sergio Agüero faces the “ridiculous” prospect of flying to Argentina and back next month to prove he is unfit for the World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay and Peru.

The Manchester City forward will miss Sunday’s Premier League trip to Liverpool and be sidelined for up to a month after injuring his right knee during last Sunday’s 3-2 victory against Southampton.

But despite Agüero’s fitness setback, the 24 year-old has been named in Alex Sabella’s Argentina squad for the games in Cordoba and Lima on Sept 7 and Sept 11 respectively. Carlos Tévez has not been included by Sabella.

With Fifa regulations allowing national associations the right to assess the fitness of their players, however, Mancini admits that Agüero could be forced to travel to South America if Sabella fails to accept the diagnosis of City’s medical staff.

“It is ridiculous.” Mancini said. “These are the rules and we need to respect these rules, but they are ridiculous rules. It’s impossible because Sergio needs a minimum of two weeks without training and then maybe he can start again. He can’t go [to Argentina].”

Agüero’s absence is likely to mean Mario Balotelli starts his first City game tomorrow since being sent off at Arsenal last April.

The Italian, whose return to pre-season training was delayed by his involvement at Euro 2012, is set to be preferred in attack ahead of Edin Dzeko.
