Welbeck, 21, has been stalling over signing a new contract, after the club reportedly refused to meet his wage demands, but United do not want his current contract - which expires next year - to run down and for the player to become a free agent.

The new deal is belived to be significantly higher than his previous £16,000-a-week deal after Welbeck's promising season last year, netting 12 goals and breaking into the England side.

His current deal was signed in December 2009, when the teenager only had a handful of starts, before he was loaned out to Sunderland.

He made 30 appearences in the Premier League last season, forincg his way into the team ahead of striking rivals Dimitar Berbatov and Javier Hernandez.
