With the summer transfer window due to close on Friday, widespread reports have suggested Rooney's future lies away from Old Trafford.

Sir Alex Ferguson, the United manager, has already insisted the England striker, currently out of action with a leg injury sustained in Saturday's defeat of Fulham, remains in his plans.

And Rooney himself said via his Twitter account tonight: "Read the nonsense in the papers and heard what people have to say. Absolute rubbish. #heretostay."

However, the striker will miss Sunday's Premier League encounter with Southampton an is expected to remain sidelined for up to two months.

The injury means that Rooney will miss England's World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine next month, along with up to 12 matches for United including trips to Liverpool and Chelsea.

Rooney will also be unavailable for the start of United's Champions League campaign, potentially missing the first three fixtures. The draw for the competition is made on Thursday.

If reports of a two-month recovery are correct, then Rooney's potential return could be away to Arsenal at the Emirates on Nov 3.

The injury could also affect any potential move for Dimitar Berbatov away from Old Trafford, with the Bulgaria striker being targeted by Fiorentina.
