Newcastle manager Alan Pardew is content with his squad as the transfer deadline approaches

Alan Pardew says he will not allow himself to relax until Friday’s transfer deadline has passed. His main concern is over which players might leave rather than the ones he could buy.

The Newcastle United manager has repeatedly said he wanted to bring in several senior players to strengthen the squad after unexpectedly finishing fifth last season.

But other than youngsters Romain Amalfitano, Gael Bigirimana and Curtis Good, he has managed to get just one, midfielder Vurnon Anita from Ajax.

Moves for Luke de Jong, Douglas, Mathieu Debuchy and Andy Carroll have all fallen through and Pardew will spend the last two days of the window trying to keep his current squad intact.

“We’re not really trying to get players in,” said Pardew, whose side play Greek club Atromitos tonight following a 1-1 draw in Athens in the first leg of their Europa League qualifier. “I’m 100 per cent happy to go with what we’ve got. I think the squad can cope with Europe.

“The young lads are going to get games this season. I’ve been saying to them, ‘This is your year.’

“I think we’re just watching the market and seeing if anything pops its head up to see if it’s appealing.”

Pardew did not totally rule out a late move for Carroll, but Liverpool are refusing to speak about a return to Tyneside for the striker.

Newcastle (4-5-1 probable): Krul; Tavernier, Williamson, Perch, R Taylor; Obertan, Gosling, Amalfitano, Bigirimana, Marveaux; Ba.

Atromitos (4-5-1 probable): Itandje; Giannoulis, Fyntanidas, Lazaridis, Skondras; Beljic, Brito, Dimoutsos, Iglesias; Epstein; Kuqi.
