Sunderland have turned the Stadium of Light into a successful concert venue, hosting Coldplay, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Bruce Springsteen gigs in May and June and only re-laid the pitch last month, although the club have denied the concerts was a reason for the water-logged surface on Saturday.
Although there was heavy rain over Sunderland on Saturday morning, modern grounds would be expected to deal with the amount of water that fell.
Sunderland have launched an international investigation and chief executive Margaret Bryne confirmed they would be seeking an explanation from TGMS.
“We will meet with our pitch consultants immediately to carry out a full analysis of events,” said Byrne in a statement.
